The Duality of Film-Making Revisited

Posted on by

Duality-SupermanBatman-CaptainAmericaIronmanMarch saw the release of London has Fallen, the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, which was paired up with the similarly themed White House Down in 2013. White House out-earned Olympus by nearly $50 million.

So, why did Olympus get a sequel while White House hasn’t? Because although both films received similar mixed reviews, Olympus nearly doubled its $70 million budget with $161 million worldwide gross, while White House barely skimmed over its $150 million budget a $205 million global take.

But, I’m not here to talk about the business of film-making, but rather the craft. Continue reading

Music Monday – Three Worlds of Winter

Posted on by

JNL-bardguitarNow that we (in the northern hemisphere) are finally saying goodbye to winter, I thought it would be a good time to share a winter-themed mash-up.

You probably know most artists in this mash-up: Vivaldi, Maxi Priest, Neil Young, and Journey. Vivaldi provides the “Winter,” while the other three provide songs with “world” somewhere in the title. I was originally inspired by how the chord progression  in “Winter,” “A Wild World,” and “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” matched up.

I was listening to Vivaldi in the car and singing Maxi Priest and Journey over it; the mash-up just grew from there.

But, the core riff (and a few other bits and pieces) are from a song called “Stereo” by one of the most under-rated bands out there, 4th Avenue Jones. I bought their CD HipRockSoul because I had also written a song called “Stereo” and wanted to see what this other song was all about. It was one of the best musical discoveries of my life.

After you check out the mash-up below, go check out 4th Avenue Jones. Continue reading

Music Monday – Yellow Brick Road

Posted on by

Music-JacobCorneliszVanOostsanenI want to restart my Music Monday series with a cover tune I took on as a challenge. I’m not a stellar guitarist, and I felt the chord structure of this Elton John tune would be a good test of my meager talents. If you’re a musician or an astute music fan, you’ll notice the flub in the second refrain that I powered through as best as I could.

I also find the storytelling of Bernie Taupin’s lyrics compelling: someone of humble beginnings who rejects being used as a social circle showpiece.

This was recorded about a half decade ago, when I was going through a particularly shaggy phase. Continue reading

Elevator Pitch – Tres Detectives

Posted on by

PitchGet this: Three detectives are run out of their hometowns and find themselves stepping on each other’s toes in Westport, California. A wealthy local businessman uncovers the secrets that drove them from their own cities and, for mysterious reasons, blackmails them into working together. The Trace Agency is born.

What is it? A historical television drama set in a fictional city during the 1930s that draws on classic detective fiction to pit different styles of private eye against each other.

Showrunners’ Strategy? The writers should familiarize themselves with the history of the period, with classic hard-boiled fiction, and with the character notes and the secrets that drew them into the agency. From there, they should simply write…

Normally, I post a synopsis of seasons or episodes, but this concept is more mood- and character-driven. Obviously the first season would focus on the circumstances that lead to the creation of the Trace Agency, and the following seasons would reveal each detective’s dirty little secrets, but beyond that it’s the writing team’s creativity that would drive it forward. So, here are the character sketches:
