I have some serious opinions about role-playing games, whether table-top or video console. I draw a bright line between genuine role-playing vs. wargaming and action gaming and board games, although I still enjoy the latter. They deserve their props, but true role-playing also deserves its own space. It has its own virtues that merit emphasis.

Role-playing gaming shares a semantic space with fiction and theater. Referees of table-top RPGs (dungeon masters or game masters) need the same skills as a good writer, and RPG players need the same skills as actors. Full emotional immersion in the story is the essence of role-playing, above and beyond victory according to standard game rules.
